A Music Nerd In The City of AngelsI love making music. I’ve been lucky to work with big names and thankful to work with new talent.
I’m Canadian. But I live in Los Angeles. It’s the 4th largest Canadian city in North America. Yes, you read that right.
I’ve been nominated for a JUNO for Producer of the year, but lost to the Canadian legendary producer David Foster. I’ll take it.
I’m a producer, but I’m also a songwriter, engineer, mixer, keyboard player, string arranger, and film scorer.
I have my own recording studio called The Backyard in Los Angeles, California, where I’ve lived for 17 years.
I was (am) a music nerd, starting at 3 years old. You can blame my mom for that. Piano and violin lessons from the age of 3, and then high school brought tuba, jazz choir, jazz band, concert band, and a multitude of Glee type ensembles.
I’ve produced, written, engineered or mixed records for Michael Jackson, Don Henley, Lenka, Emmy Rossum (Shameless), Mindy Gledhill, Joe Brooks, Emm Gryner, Brandy, NSYNC, Barbra Streisand, Cher, Seal, Celine Dion, and many more.
I co-wrote Don Henley’s single “Taking You Home,” which received a BMI award for being one of the most played songs of the year. That was pretty cool.
I produced a #1 hit with Lenka’s “The Show,” a song featured in several films and advertising campaigns, most notably the feature film “Moneyball.” And now I’ll never sell the upright piano we used in the recording. In fact, we just used it again on her upcoming songs.
I produced several tracks for Michael Jackson’s posthumous release, “Michael.” That was tough to do. After spending a year with him in 2000/2001, his death was a very sad and surreal event. And to then work with his voice after the fact, well it was something I’ll never forget. Only three songs that we worked on were released, and only after other producers had fiddled with it, so it’s not how I wanted it to turn out. After his death I did an interview with Jian Ghomeshi on CBC’s “Q.” If you want to hear me babble on National Radio about one of the greatest artists of our generation, you can click here. It’s about 9 minutes long.
In addition to producing records, I write and produce music for advertising as PrimalScream Music’s LA Head Composer, with recent work including Fruit Of The Loom, Ford, Curves, Firestone, Fruit of The Loom, and many more.
I just competed mixing a feature length indie film “Birthday Cake,” written and produced by Chad Darnell, and recently produced a new EP with Joe Brooks, a couple new songs with Lenka, and starting work with a super talented new artist, Alejandra Halverson.
